Mrs. LawsonFreshman Health Course Information

The goal of Freshman Health is for you to discover your current level of health, analyze the positives and negatives, and use that information to create a health plan that will help guide you through high school. This course will be personalized to you and include a lot of student/teacher feedback. Freshman Health will meet two times per week for a semester. Course content will based on results from the Together for Health surveys and include subject matter from the following PA State Standards for Health Education:

10.1.9.A. Analyze factors that impact growth and development between adolescence and adulthood.
• relationships
• interpersonal communication
• risk factors
• abstinence
• STI and HIV prevention
• community

10.1.9.D. Analyze prevention and intervention strategies in relation to adolescent and adult drug use.
• decision-making/refusal skills
• situation avoidance
• goal setting
• professional assistance
• parent involvement

10.2.9.A. Identify and describe health care products and services that impact adolescent health practices.

10.2.9.D. Analyze and apply a decision-making process to adolescent health and safety issues.

10.3.9.A. Analyze the role of individual responsibility for safe practices and injury prevention in the home, school and community.

• self-protection in the home
• self-protection in public places

10.3.9.C. Analyze and apply strategies to avoid or manage conflict and violence during adolescence.
• effective negotiation
• assertive behavior

In addition, we will cover concussions, hygiene, emotional health, stress management, communication, bullying/youth violence, and Internet safety.

Supplies Needed (Bring Everyday!):
  • iPad
  • Folder w/Notebook Paper
  • Black or Blue Pen

Student Expectations:
In order for you to be successful you must:
  1. Come to class prepared and on time – you must bring your Health folder and a writing utensil to class everyday
  2. Follow school and classroom rules
  3. Actively participate in classroom discussion and activities
  4. Complete all required assignments…SAVE EVERYTHING!! Everything we do in class is needed for your final Health Plan assignment!
  5. Make up work after being absent…this is your responsibility!

Student Assessments:
  1. Classwork…almost ALL classwork will be graded!
  2. Quizzes
  3. Project: Health Plan (ongoing throughout semester)
  4. Extra Credit
  5. Homework – This depends on YOU! Personally, I do not like to give homework. Therefore, I expect that WE will all work very hard in class. IfYOU work as hard as I do, then you will not have any homework!

*Assignments are due on the date assigned. You will have a day grace period for every day absent.

Mrs. Lawson’s Classroom Expectations
  1. Come to class on time and prepared with folder and pen/pencil.
  2. I talk…you listen. You talk…we all listen. (MOST IMPORTANT RULE!)
  3. Raise your hand if you have a question or comment and wait to be called on.
  4. Be respectful to yourself and others.
  5. Work hard and stay on task!
  6. NO CELL PHONES!

Consequences for NOT Meeting Classroom Expectations:
  1. Warning.
  2. Talk with Mrs. Lawson to address issue.
  3. Phone call home.
  4. Request parent/guardian meeting.
  5. Mr. Kretschmer as a last resort; I’m sure this will not be needed!
